Breast cancer describes breast cancer that is only in the ducts and lobules of the breast tissue.
Depending on the type of Stage 0 breast cancer. If a woman has LCIS there may be no treatment required, with only close follow-up to ensure nothing further develops. However, with DCIS one of two surgical treatments will be required. Either Breast-sparing surgery, followed by radiation therapy, or mastectomy. The goal of both surgeries is to remove all of the cancer from the breast.
CHARACTERISTICS (Stage 0):
- No tumor, stage 0 is the growth of abnormal lobules and indicates an increased risk of developing the cancer, or cancer cells are still within a duct and have not invaded deeper into the surrounding fatty breast tissue
- No evidence of cancer in the lymph nodes
